In communities across the nation, churches are responding to homelessness. Opening their doors for night shelters and offering food parcels and warm clothing to people in need.
But as demand increases, how can churches maximise the impact of their support?
From homelessness to hope: Gareth’s story

Gareth has had a challenging journey. Before Hope into Action, he was navigating addiction and personal loss. He reached a point where he knew he needed change, but stability was hard to maintain.
After rehab, Gareth moved into a Hope into Action home, surrounded by a supportive community – an empowerment worker, a friendship and support group, and a local church network. Step by step, Gareth rebuilt confidence, routines, work, and relationships. His story shows what is possible when the right support is in place over time.

The three types of poverty that lead to homelessness
Gareth’s story shows why we believe that homelessness is the result of three interlinked forms of poverty.
- Poverty of Resources – not having a safe place to sleep, a home to call your own or financial means to change your circumstances
- Poverty of Relationships – family breakdown, loss of connection, trauma or isolation
- Poverty of Identity – where a person’s sense of worth and value is undermined
Homes are a place of relationship and identity as well as shelter. Addiction and other complex challenges can affect all three areas, stripping away stability, relationships and self-worth.
Understanding homelessness through these three forms of poverty helps explain why lasting solutions need to go beyond providing accommodation. True change requires helping people rebuild stability, relationships and confidence for the future.
Going beyond housing: Hope into Action's approach
It can be tempting to think that addressing the needs of people affected by homelessness is as simple as handing out resources. While this might be the case for people in immediate crisis, at Hope into Action we want to address the longer-term chronic issues, such as the ones Gareth faced. And this is about building relationships and helping people restore their identity.
The Church has a unique message and ability to respond to all three forms of poverty. By partnering with churches, we provide housing, relationships through friendship and community, and the opportunity to renew identity – not just through being served but by serving and finding faith. This is why the gospel message is so relevant to addressing homelessness.

The impact of Hope into Action across the UK
We are deeply grateful for the support of Benefact Trust, whose partnership has strengthened our work across the UK.
In 2025–26, we supported 501 tenants through 134 homes across 37 locations. This reflects the impact of combining safe housing, professional support and church community to help people rebuild their lives. In fact, 91% of tenants who previously served a custodial sentence have not reoffended.
